The Avengers surpassed 1.5 billion in the box office and Avengers 2: Age of Ultron surpassed one billion. Even Marvel’s recent rated R production, Deadpool, earned about 760 million dollars. The three movies were a success, proved by the incredible amount of people who watched the movies.
“Because the graphics designs is really realistic. It also has popping colors too and generally the story plot is fun.” Christine Lee, an eighth-grader, explains. “It’s been a series for a long time . . . to see the end, you need to see all the movies.”
Not only that, but the upcoming sequels like Captain America 3: Civil War and X-men: Apocalypse excite all ages, but these movies are not the only Marvel movies upcoming. Doctor Strange, a remake of the 1978 version, is coming out in November. Doctor Strange, not as popular as Iron Man or Captain America, may not bring the same success as Iron Man. Yet, the trailer still intrigues the audience, making them wonder about who Doctor Strange is. Although many audience members do not know about the comic character, they know the basics about the character.
However, many students of Seoul International School do not know anything about Doctor Strange. “I think he’s the bad guy,” said Christine Lee, being asked who Doctor Strange is. “And he’s pretty strange.”
“Doctor what?” replies eighth-grader Eliana Kim when asked with the same question.
Benedict Cumberbatch acts as Stephen Vincent Strange who ‘was’ a surgeon. After a car accident, Dr. Strange seeks medication for his paralyzed hands from the Ancient One, a magician. Realizing his talent for ‘magic’, Stephen learns mystical arts and martial arts, later becoming one of the greatest magicians in the galaxy with abilities like dimension and time travel. As a powerful character, Doctor Strange needs to be introduced to the audience, as he plays a role in the ‘Infinity War’ which every Marvel movie sets up the ending displaying the ruler of the galaxy, Thanos.
Why should we know more about Doctor Strange now and not in November? You can learn about Doctor Strange from the movie, however, Doctor Strange is so different from other Marvel characters like the science fictional character Iron Man and the god, Thor. Therefore, knowing Doctor Strange a little bit more would not harm at all when watching the movie.
