Being a Journalist
Story By: Aidan Kim Editor: Joshua Hahn Web Designer: Andy Yoon
Tiger News is a project given by Mr. Tong, the Communications teacher. In this project, there are 4 editors in each class, one website designer, and all others will start as a normal journalists. To become a website uploader or an editor, the have to make through the auditions and has to get picked by Mr. Tong. The beneficial point of being an editor or a website uploader is starting the project with a 500 point salary receiving partial credit for each article they monitor. Everybody else without a specific job will start off with no points at all. Having a lot of points to start off with is a huge advantage since everyone’s target is to reach 2500 points. Reaching 2500 points in this project gets you a 100%. Even though editors get a huge advantage in the beginning, one disadvantage is that they have much more work to do since they have to help others and they have to work on their own which will usually double the amount of their work. A recommendation is that everyone should start as soon as possible, because there are benefits for turning in the work by the decided due dates. This time bonus affects your total point since a few hundred point might decide when you reach your 2500 points.
To create an article, the first thing to do is that you have to choose a topic. There a lot of different kind of major topics such as high school lookouts, pop culture, just to list a few. After this decision, you will begin to write about your topic. If you want to get a full point for one story then you will have to write an article between 325~400 words, a video that is built up with interviews and information about your topic and at least 2 pictures and a caption for each. If you have all these things in your story, then you will get above 1000 points if this article was individually published. Also, if you get a time bonus, you will get a couple hundred points more. You can do this with a partner, but one bad side to this is that you will have to split the points in half and write more stories. According to the 8th graders who are working on this project, this project helps cultivate writing skills and helps students work faster and be able to grasp the concept of time management. Although it may be a tough project, most of the the 8th graders enjoy it, as they say it is a very good experience and they said that it is a really good time to learn for students who wants to become a journalists. All the interviewed 8th graders had agreed for the upcoming 8th graders to carry on this project.
