Many people in Korea enjoy spicy food. The variety of different spicy dishes range from savory deliciousness to flaming hot bites that will kick one’s taste buds. Because spicy foods are popular among Koreans, it is easy to find them anywhere for an affordable price. One of the most popular, spicy foods that are easy to find anywhere is the Booldalkbokkeummyun or Fire Noodles that set tongues on fire.
The Fire Noodles contain various peppers including red pepper seed oil to pepper powder and the infamous capsaicin. People challenge each other to try this savory noodle. Now when Koreans are asked “Are you good at eating spicy food?” many in Korea simply say that they can finish a fire noodle.
A few months back a TV channel called “On Style” released a video with this fire noodle being cooked in a specific way that spiced it up even more and motivated a lot of people to try the noodle to see if it did indeed made the noodle more fiery. To test this, a couple SIS students to try this new recipe.
To spice it up the mystery sauce that contains one of the most spicy chili in Korea “Cheongyang Chili” and olive oil was mixed in with the ramen. After stirring the noodle together it was served to the brave hearts that accepted the challenge.
Our first challenger Gina Yang (8) stated, “I am not good at eating spicy food” and showed immediate reaction from the first bite. She could not finish the whole cup noodle and said it was too spicy for her to tolerate, but it tasted good nonetheless.
The other taste testers stated that it isn’t very spicy, but the original tasted better because of the strong scent of the cheongyang chili in the noodles they were tested with. “I’ve tried the fire noodle a lot, and I think it tastes better without the special sauce” Kristina Youyoung Kim (8). “The cheongyang chili scent may be too strong for some people” Kyuhee Han (8).
In conclusion all of taste testers enjoyed the noodles, but consistently reminded us that the original may taste better for people who cannot tolerate the chili flavor. All of them said that people should try this recipe if they are up for the challenge. So if you think you can take the spice you should go for it.
