Food trucks have increased its popularity over the years in Korea. The foods sold are high quality with affordable prices. The past years, the government started to acknowledge that many are starting to use food trucks to sell food and expanded the legal areas around the country for the trucks to go and sell their products. Customers can buy foods such as sandwiches, pizza, sushi, pasta, churros, and many more from the food trucks.
During the interview, when asked what are some advantages of food trucks, the owner of the food truck ‘Oh Oh Chu’ said there are “more connections” between the customer and himself because he gets to see the customers and talk to them. He remembers many customers because they buy his churros often. He also said that he likes that he doesn’t have a superior relationship and doesn’t need to worry about looking bad or making a mistake in front of his boss and colleagues.
On April 25, 2016, the officials of the Seoul government decided that starting from May, they’re starting a program that will let people experience how to run a food truck and help them get started with their own. “Many people fail running their food trucks because of the lack of knowledge they have about running a food truck” one official said. To help those running a food truck, an event called the “Seoul Bamdokkaebi Night Market” started on March 31, 2016. It’s held every Thursdays and Fridays from 6 to 11 pm at the Yeouido Hangang Park. Another official said that “The Seoul Bamdokkaebi Night Market has given the citizen a new joy and is also predicted to help the local economy”. Not only that, but there are more events held and planned all over Korea. From May, at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza a night market will be held where food trucks are allowed to sell their products. Also, another large night market is planned to open at Mokdong Stadium in July.
Food trucks in Korea are increasing its popularity over time and it’s predicted to be a popular and common way of selling foods in the future. Not only is the food cheap/ affordable but is very high quality and is loved by many people. Food trucks are a new culture in Korea that will be acknowledged more in the future.
