There has been a recent boom of Korean fusion food, a type of food which combines two culinary cultures into one food. It can bring diverse foods and ideas to the food industry, making it an effective way of marketing with new, unique concepts. It can also bring culinary globalization, as it is a combination of two different cultures and ignores the “imaginary line” between the cultures. However, it has also brought about a controversy. Many people disagree with fusion food because they often result in the culture and tradition of the original food belonging to an individual country to be muddied, and destroys the purpose and identity of the original food.
Fusion food has become more popular recently in Korea, with more diverse menus being released to the world such as “carbonara tteokbokki”, where tteokbokki, a spicy Korean dish made of rice cakes, and carbonara sauce are mixed together. There are also dessert dishes such as “melon bingsu” where a tropical fruit, melon, is added to a cold Korean dessert, bingsu. Due to the fact that fusion menus are a rising trend in Korea, it is common to find dishes of mixed cultures in restaurants all around the country.
The rapid spread of this concept in Seoul suggests that students in our 8th grade student body will be enjoying these dishes soon in their daily lives. Fusion food has become the trend and a common thing in Seoul, especially Garosugil or other hot places, where kids in our grade usually go play at. They will soon come to eat it in the near future, which is the reason why people should know about fusion food.
Through a short questionnaire we asked in the streets of Gangnam, we could see that by far, many people have experienced eating fusion foods. Some people liked eating it because it tasted good or liked the creative idea, while others didn’t like the mix of cultures and losing a culture’s tradition in food. There were a variety of surveyed individuals: people who have not yet experienced fusion food, some people who wanted to try, and some people who showed negative responses. Fusion food has become the new “thing”, but it brings many shared opinions and aspects.
