Athletes try to avoid injuries while playing sports, but sometimes they are inevitable. Anything can happen during the game. For example, when the opponent goes for the tackle and accidentally collide into one’s fragile muscle, this will most likely lead to a major injury. If unrecoverable, their career as an athlete would finished. To avoid these situations, all athletes must be cautious towards injuries.
Mr. Bae, a current soccer teacher that teaches amateur soccer athletes in college, high school, middle school and even elementary school, was confident he would represent Korea and play with the best, while earning money and fame. However, his life took a different path because of a career ending injury on the hamstring. The hamstring is the most important muscle for soccer players because it’s the main muscle that controls the legs. After this incident, he had to let go of his dream of becoming a country-representing soccer player and instead, became a soccer teacher.
When asked about his career as a soccer player and a soccer teacher, Mr. Bae expressed how he always watches out for the students injury. “If they really like the sport and want to become a professional player, then they would have to work hard and show their passion and desire. I wish the students would be more aware of career-ending injuries though- I’m always watching out for them.”
Mr. Bae suggests that a proper meal and having a good rest will significantly increase the performance in game. He also suggested that pre game stretching could help avoid injuries since stretching helps relaxing and warming up the muscles. Without a proper warm up the muscles would be stiff and in situations when needed sudden acceleration, athletes will have the muscles to flex in order to get to the destination faster.
Usually, amateur athletes dream of gaining the spotlight and competing with star players. But when it comes to reality, no matter how skilled, if it comes to major injuries it will end the career. As Mr. Bae said “An athlete needs talent, luck and effort or else they will end up doing nothing or suffer from the injury for their entire life. Because this would cause a dramatic ending of one’s dream of becoming a professional athlete that they’ve worked on their whole life risking a lot of risks. Young athletes should always be cautious to prevent injuries.”
