Speak Your Mind

As one of the more popular high school clubs at SIS, a majority of this year’s eighth graders are preparing for the impending tryouts to join the HS Forensics club. Although the experience may be daunting, not many are willing to back down from their chance to continue their public speaking career. To enhance their public speaking skills, a myriad of 8th graders attend different academies that excel in nurturing the nation’s best debaters. Therefore, the tryout pool of this club is one of the largest every year in comparison to others.
To accommodate for the sheer amount of public speakers at SIS, the club provides many options to choose from when trying out. For the students who are interested in arguing for or against a specific motion, the Debate faction is available. Not only does debate ameliorate one’s persuasive writing and logical thinking, but it also encourages collaboration. However, for students who are not interested in persuasion, but in eloquently speaking about a general subject, you can apply for the Speech faction, which fosters one’s creative writing skills and impromptu speaking. No matter what faction students choose, either category will enhance one’s writing and speaking abilities.
However, many students remain ambivalent as to whether they should apply for the HS Forensics club or not. The tryouts will occur this September and one will have to make a brief five minute speech in front of esteemed upperclassmen and teachers. Unfortunately, these unsure students often either feel unconfident because they do not have as much experience as others or because the tryouts are intimidating. On the other hand, the HS Forensics club is willing to welcome any adept speaker, whether he/she has experience. There are no requirements, except for having a proactive attitude and a strong basis of speaking abilities. Therefore, the HS Forensics club is open-minded, with a plethora of options for students to choose from, and straightforward expectations for freshmen applying to this award-winning club.
