With Twenty One Pilots fourth album Blurryface, the band was able to reach the Top 10 single with the album reaching their first No.1 album on the Billboard 200. Twenty One Pilots is a band that consists of two members, Tyler Joseph, lead singer and Josh dun, the drummer. The band was formed in 2009 with their first album Twenty One Pilots which contained a total of 14 songs (Artist Biography by Fred Thomas). Their first two albums Twenty One Pilots and Regional at Best were both self released albums and were created before they were signed to the label Fueled by Ramen. Afterwards albums like Vessel and Blurryface were released.
The album Blurryface, which was released on May 17, 2015, is about the elements of our own selves that we dislike and the other side of us that consists of our fear. The name “Blurryface” was created by the lead singer and songwriter Tyler Joseph. In the Interview from Fuse, Tyler Joseph states that, “Blurryface is a character that really represents everything that I am insecure of as an individual,” He put all the negative characteristics, his fears, and insecurities into a different personal self. Blurryface is a person that he is afraid of and doesn't want to accept. In the interview, Tyler Joseph also says that, “This character needs to be defeated whether it’s through writing songs or through playing music,” He wants to battle Blurryface and not feel weak against the things that he is most afraid of.
Blurryface contains lyrics that are meaningful to people, and they are able to connect their real life problems to the lyrics. Unlike most other songs, Twenty One Pilots produces music that is relatable for both teens and adults, and explains more about the personalities that we are unfamiliar with, and they battle personal identities. From the highlights of their Blurryface Tour, in one of the interviews they say “I love their lyrics because they resonate with a lot of stuff I go through, and it’s really inspiring that we’re not the only ones feeling this way,” Music that are produced nowadays are based on the songwriters thinking what they can do to make the song more catchy. But instead, Twenty One Pilots focuses more on the lyrics, and shows how much they care about their music and fans.
